Job Summary: Reporting to the HDSS Section branch Manager and other supervisors, the incumbent will be responsible for developing software applications for HDSS and various studies within, or collaborating with HDSS, and the KEMRI/CDC program. They will be expected to work on various databases/studies, explore, research and adopt different emerging technologies and therefore should be able to prioritize tasks and meet set deadlines.
Specific tasks and responsibilities 1. Design and manage databases and data entry procedures. 2. Prepares flow charts and systems diagrams to assist in problem analysis 3. Train, support and maintain deployed applications 4. Designs, codes, tests and debugs software according to KEMRI/CDC standards, policies and procedures. 5. Responsible for preparing technical documentation for design, implementation, testing, deployment and support, tests and documents programs. 6. Prepares test data for unit, string and parallel testing. 7. Analyzes Study needs and creates software solutions 8. Evaluates and recommends software and hardware solutions to meet user needs. 9. JOB SUMMARY: The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is a joint effort to implement a coordinated package of well-supported interventions to improve maternal, newborn and child health and survival through a continuum of care approach, using health promotion strategies spanning from pre-pregnancy through pregnancy, delivery, postnatal and neonatal periods, and early childhood. The GHI Program Coordinator will work closely with the branch chiefs and other KEMRI/CDC leadership to develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive research project which combines public health activities, epidemiological research and surveillance. Possible areas of topical focus include evaluating community- and facility-based strategies to improve maternal and child health, nutrition and survival; leveraging population-based infectious disease surveillance systems to establish the impact of public health interventions against malaria, respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases, acute febrile illnesses, and other syndromes. The GHI Program Coordinator will supervise and support teams of junior scientific staff, in consultation with the branch chiefs and other leadership, to design and implement public health research and intervention studies, collect and analyze epidemiological data, and disseminate results (including through scientific publications and presentation). In addition, the incumbent will monitor and advise the branch chiefs and other leadership on matters of project staffing, budget preparation and efficient allocation of resources. A fundamental responsibility of the GHI Program Coordinator will be to ensure the highest scientific quality and integrity of data and dissemination materials generated within this project.

Essential Requirements: · Education: BSc to MSC in biological field, preferably medical entomology/vector biology · Language: Excellent written and verbal skills in English. · Experience: Must have at least 3 years previous work experience in medical entomology at a recognized research institute and must have previous experience establishing Anopheles arabiensis colonies and working with outdooring biting malaria vectors in the field and laboratory. · Additional skills in identification of malaria vectors and evaluation of sporozoite infection status are also required. · Field experience with livestock animals and field mosquito collection experience in Nyanza province is preferred.

Project Objectives: Objectives of the Influenza Program in Nyanza Province include implementation of funded research and surveillance projects to: i) substantially expand influenza and respiratory disease surveillance at Siaya District hospital to evaluate burden of disease, ii) implement new influenza vaccine immunogenicity/effectiveness studies using recently developed vaccination technologies, iii) to evaluate new rapid diagnostic and multiplex PCR technologies to detect influenza and other respiratory pathogens, and iv) to continue to operate influenza surveillance activities within the broader International Emerging Infection Program (IEIP) and Global Disease Detection (GDD) surveillance platforms.
POSITION: RESEARCH OFFICER (DEPUTY PROGRAM DIRECTOR – MR 12 (1 POSITION)

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS · A minimum of a Masters Degree in Project Planning and Management, Public Health, or a medical qualification degree (MBChB) · Must be Fluent in English (written and oral), an example of scientific writing will be requested as part of the application. · Must have a minimum of 3years of supervisory experience. Position description: The Deputy Program Director will provide oversight and coordination to all influenza projects, new and continuing in Nyanza Province. This includes hospital-based surveillance for influenza, vaccine and intervention research programs, and clinic and community-based influenza activities occurring within IEIP and GDD population-based sites. Another responsibility of the incumbent will include the official management of all KEMRI/CDC cooperative agreement staff hired within influenza-funded projects and surveillance systems in Kenya. A critical component of this position will be to undertake priority activities for the Influenza Program while maintaining seamless coordination, integration, and support for other ongoing IEIP and GDD surveillance and research projects that are taking place within Nyanza Province. This will involve regular meetings and interactions with other programmatic heads, and the GDD Nyanza Branch Chief. The incumbent will also be required to coordinate collaborations with the Government of Kenya, and apply technical leadership through monitoring of surveillance and research data quality. The incumbent will maintain and supervise a full and competent workforce and report to the GDD Nyanza Branch Chief in Kisumu. To the extent that program support beyond influenza activities is requested of the incumbent, this will be undertaken in coordination with the Influenza Program Director.
Specific tasks and responsibilities: 1. Work closely with the Influenza Program Director, under the oversight of the GDD Nyanza Branch Chief, to supervise Nyanza Province-based influenza surveillance officers, clinical officers, administrative officers, laboratory staff, and data management staff 2. Serve as the official supervisor to all KEMRI/CDC cooperative agreement staff hired within influenza-funded projects in Kenya 3. Monitor ongoing and future project logistics including data collection systems as well as all implementation logistics: develop timelines and project plans for new surveillance and research protocols 4. Manage logistics and provide oversight of laboratory specimen and epidemiological data collection in order to ensure project efficiency and accuracy in data collection and analysis 5. Oversee the overall procurement, administrative and financial activities for the Influenza Program in liaison with the Administrative Officer. 6. Coordinate data management and analyses activities with the influenza data section lead, and manage activities of Kisumu-based data analysts in order to ensure accurate and timely reporting of influenza data used to advise influenza policies and inform the public on an ongoing basis 7. JOB SUMMARY: The IEIP Program Coordinators will work closely with the branch chief and other KEMRI/CDC leadership to develop and oversee implementation of topically focused portfolios of epidemiological research and surveillance projects and public health response activities. Possible areas of topical focus include evaluating community- and facility-based strategies to improve maternal and child health, nutrition and survival; using national sources of data on trends in pediatric diarrheal illness to monitor the impact of rotavirus vaccine introduction to the EPI schedule in 2013; and leveraging population-based infectious disease surveillance systems to establish the burden and causes of respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases, acute febrile illnesses, and other syndromes. The Program Coordinators will supervise and support teams of junior scientific staff, in consultation with the branch chief and other IEIP leadership, to design and implement public health research and intervention studies, collect and analyze epidemiological data, and disseminate results (including through scientific publications and presentation). In addition, the incumbents will monitor and advise the branch chief and other IEIP leadership on matters of project staffing, budget preparation and efficient allocation of resources. A fundamental responsibility of the Program Coordinators will be to ensure the highest scientific quality and integrity of data and dissemination materials generated within their areas of focus within IEIP.

Job Description: The successful applicant will be responsible for all the Quality Assurance aspects of the Diagnostic and Laboratory Systems Program (DLSP) laboratories in Kisumu. S/he will work closely with the laboratory staff, data analysts and field workers and will work as part of the DLSP Laboratory Systems team under the Laboratory Director. The successful applicant will also make an important contribution to the laboratory systems regionally. This position serves as a full time QA officer with this activity representing 100% of the duties. His/her functions will be, but not be limited to the following;
Responsibilities.1. Oversee a quality control program appropriate for tests performed in the DLSP laboratories and other partner laboratories in Kenya and the region served by the GDDER. 2. Implement improvements to laboratory testing procedures to improve efficiency, resource utilization, decrease turnaround time, etc., utilizing new and established laboratory policies and procedures. 3. Develop, perform, and manage an audit program that encompasses all phases of laboratory practices and field sample collection and provide assurance that, documentation, and record-keeping requirements are met. 4. Perform scheduled and unscheduled checks on bench scientists. 5. Administer the proficiency testing and EQA. 6. Maintain current and accurate records of all relevant communications, audits, corrective action plans, and effectiveness monitoring. 7. Maintain current and accurate records of all personnel qualifications, certifications and contact information. 8. Review, track and communicate information regarding process variations and quality control samples as required by laboratory quality assurance procedures. 9. Check validation systems for all pieces of equipment to ensure maximal function (service schedules, daily panel runs, etc) 10. Ensure daily maintenance charts are well documented. 11. Perform/supervise training and it’s documentation for lab staff. 12. Review and maintain all laboratory SOPs 13. JOB SUMMARY: The Deputy Branch Chief will supervise and coordinate HDSS senior staff. JOB SUMMARY: The IEIP Program Coordinators will work closely with the branch chief and other IEIP leadership to develop and oversee implementation of topically focused portfolios of epidemiological research and surveillance projects and public health response activities. Possible areas of topical focus include respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases and nutrition, acute febrile illnesses, population-based infectious disease surveillance systems, among others. The Program Coordinators will supervise and support teams of junior scientific staff, in consultation with the branch chief and other IEIP leadership, to design and implement public health research and intervention studies, collect and analyze epidemiological data, and disseminate results (including through scientific publications and presentation). In addition, the incumbents will monitor and advise the branch chief and other IEIP leadership on matters of project staffing, budget preparation and efficient allocation of resources. The fundamental responsibility of the Program Coordinators will be to ensure the highest scientific quality and integrity of data and dissemination materials generated within their areas of focus within IEIP.

POSITION: Training Coordinator (1 position) (MR 9) Location: Kisumu REPORTING TO: Human Resources Chief
Essential requirements: · Bachelor’s degree in Management with an emphasis in education or related qualification · Post graduate qualification in human resources, project management, organizational development, or a health discipline training · Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in human resources, education management or working in administration · Computer literacy · Experience working with large groups of stakeholders and the ability to manage diverse needs and opinions
Additional Desirable requirements:
The Training Coordinator is a key member of the KEMRI/CDC Research and Public Health Collaboration management, reporting to the Field Station Director. The position is responsible for coordinating all internal and external trainings in the program.
The Training Coordinator will provide overall training coordination in the Field Station and provide support to the Director’s office. The Training Coordinator will also provide training leadership in Clinical/Research, computer/ data management and general training in the program including internship and student attachments.
The Training Coordinator should demonstrate excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
Major functional areas include;
Clinical and Research training: · Working with various research projects in the program, the Training Coordinator will ensure that staff have the required clinical trainings, as determined by the Principal Investigator of each research project · Ensure that all staff in have training in ethics/Good Clinical Practice, Good Laboratory Practice (GCP/LP) · Work with leadership to ensure timely delivery of clinical trainings such as advance trauma, pediatric life support among others. · Develop and lead a pool of in-house trainers for GCP and clinical training · Working with partners such as MOH and others in provision of trainings relevant to the Field Station · Organize for data management, statistical trainings, and other operational trainings for relevant staff and departments/projects · Develop a database of in house trainers and areas of specialization
Leadership and Management: · Develop the training annual work plan and appropriate budget · Coordinate and manage the base scholarship scheme · Coordinating the leadership management class including teaching sessions to supervisors and upcoming managers · Spearhead grants management trainings · Procurement and maintain training equipment in good condition · Ensure that all training documentation is up to date including the staff seminars in Kisian, CRC PGH and Siaya · Ensure that staff training payments are on time · Track staff on all forms of training · Perform any other duty as assigned
Terms of Employment: A 1 year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.
