VACANCY RE-ADVERTISEMENT KEMRI/CDC PROGRAM Opening date: 28/03/2012 EXTENSION OF CLOSING DATE Vacancy No.K38/03/12 Program description: The KEMRI/CDC program in Kisumu has expanded considerably in its research and program support activities. This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It involves conducting research in malaria, HIV and other diseases while also providing support for HIV and TB programs in Kenya. The program supports multiple research projects including clinical trials. This announcement seeks a coordinator for a new study on water access, food security, child health, and HIV progression conducted in collaboration with Stanford University, USA.
Position: Research Officer (Study Coordinator) MR 11 Location: Kisumu Reporting to: Principal Investigators.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: Academic qualifications: Masters Degree in public health, environmental health, or relevant field preferred. Experience: Minimum 3 years of work experience in public health preferred.
DESIRED QUALITIES: · Excellent communication and interpersonal skills · Fluency in English and Kiswahili (oral and written) · Strong computer skills · Experience with electronic household survey data collection preferred · General knowledge of epidemiology, nutrition, agriculture, and HIV/AIDS preferred. · Experience measuring child anthropometrics preferred. · Experience with microbial water quality laboratory analysis a plus. · Strong organizational, leadership and management skills required. · At least one year of supervisory experience. · Interest in the links between water access, food security, nutrition, and infectious disease.
Job summary: The job holder will be responsible for day-to-day implementation and co-ordination of the research project, under the guidance of the study PI.
Duties and responsibilities: · Supervise and co-ordinate with the field supervisor, community interviewers, clinical officers, and drivers involved in the study. · Develop good working relationships with the community. · Ensure that necessary supplies are in stock for the study team. · Ensure that study operations run smoothly and that data are collected appropriately. · Develop an in-depth understanding of the study design and goals so that he/she can participate fully in the successful implementation and execution of the study. · Participate fully in staff training. · Problem-solve on site and adequately respond to questions about the study posed by study staff, study participants and others. · Serve as the liaison between the study team, the study PI’s, and collaborators at Stanford University. · Coordinate and oversee the transport of water samples from the field site to a processing center. · Ensure results are correctly recorded and reported and appropriate QA/QC procedures are followed. · Coordinate abstraction of patient data from clinical records and help in matching them with survey data. · Provide progress status reports to PI’s on a monthly basis. · Other duties as assigned by the PI. Terms of Employment: One year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months. Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
