Opening date: 02/04/2012 Vacancy number: 39/04/2012 Program description: This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose mandate is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases The Diagnostic and Laboratory Systems Program is seeking applications from energetic, motivated and innovative people to become part of a team in developing a quality assurance program within the DSLP laboratories.
POSITION: Assistant Research Officer (1 position) MR 9 LOCATION: Kisumu Reports to: Lab Supervisor, Enterics
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS · Must hold Bachelors degree in Biomedical Sciences or relevant field. · Proficiency in oral and written communication in English · Must have hands-on experience with bacteriologic culture, microscopy and immunologic assays · Must be computer literate.
DESIRABLE QUALITIES: · Experience with cell culture, ELISA/serology, PCR and DNA sequencing and sequence analysis · Ability to effectively communicate with staff and clients verbally and in writing
Job Description: The Assistant Research Officer will report directly to the Laboratory Director and will work in a Biosafety Level-2 laboratory on emerging infectious diseases. S/he will perform the duties below:
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities.· Perform PCR testing for enteric pathogens, including bacterial, viral and parasitic agents of diarrheal diseases. · Perform serology · Perform bacteriologic culture, antimicrobial sensitivity testing and isolate archiving. · Develop testing and research protocols and direct research projects as required by the IEIP Director or Laboratory Director
Terms of Employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
