INTERNAL VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTKEMRI/CDC RESERCH & PUBLIC HEALTH COLLABORATIONOpening date: 02/04/2012 Vacancy number: 42/04/2012 Program description: This program is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV, TB, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, and other diseases. It is in this mandate that the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) branch has a vacancy to fill. Position: Field assistant (9 positions -Temporal) MR 6 Location: Homabay Reporting to: Study Co-ordinator, Homabay
Essential Requirements: · O Level Certificate Grade C- and Certificate in Biological sciences or Community Health or related field · Previous experience with field research activities including use of Smart-phone for data collection, collection of stool/blood and taking anthropometric measurements · Training in research ethics · Experience with community mobilization. · Knowledge of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths. · Willing to work and reside outside Kisumu · Basic computer skills particularly for Word-processing, spreadsheets and e-mail required.
Desirable qualities, skills and abilities: · Experience in research, health and development. · Strong writing and communication skills in English and Kiswahili. · Experience working in a schistosomiasis and/or STH research project · Knowledge in use, handling and care of PDAs or Smart phones is an added advantage · Respectful, punctual, hardworking, conscientious, flexible and able to work independently and as an active member of a multidisciplinary team. · Attention to detail and good work ethic. · Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision. · Must be a team player!
Responsibilities: · Ensure proper administration of consent procedures · Collection of stool and blood samples according to the protocol · Taking anthropometric measurements and recording data on Smart phone · Troubleshoot logistical and technical issues in the field. · Ensure all field materials are prepared on time and all field data collection instruments completed appropriately · Prepare field reports and regular progress reports for submission to the study co-ordinator. · Work collaboratively with Ministry of Health Team and other partners in study area · Ensure that data are collected accurately, and resolve any discrepancies in the data · Participate in Community and school mobilization and enrollment into study · Conduct participant follow-up activities and feedback sessions · Participate in treatment and recording of adverse side effects · Work closely with other laboratory staff and field workers · Perform other duties as assigned by study co-ordinator
Terms of Employment: Contract for 2 months, non-renewable.
