Program description: This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. Due to its continued growth, the Global Disease Detection (GDD) Division program has a vacancy in the Diagnostics & Laboratory Systems (DLSP).

 

POSITION:     Laboratory Supervisor (1 position) MR 11

LOCATION:     KISUMU - KEMRI/CDC OFFICES

REPORTS TO:   Lab Manager

 

Essential Qualifications

·         Must hold a Masters’ degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry or a related field from a recognized institution

·         Minimum 3 years working in a busy research laboratory

·         Experience in bacterial culture, PCR, sequencing and ELISA

·         Experience in performing microbiologic diagnosis tests and the related laboratory quality assurance/quality control measures

·         Proficiency in oral and written communication in English

 

Desirable Qualities

·         Hard working, diligent and ready to work in a multidisciplinary environment

·         Good problem solving skills, awareness of own limitations and strong personal motivation

·         Good knowledge of laboratory documentation, record keeping and inventory management

·         Knowledge of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP) and bio-safety guidelines

·         Experience in serology, RNA & DNA

·         Excellent interpersonal skills

·         Basic computer application skills

 

Job Description: The Laboratory Supervisor will report directly to the Laboratory Manager and will work in the Zoonoses Laboratory and Biosafety Level-3 Laboratory. S/he will perform the duties below:

 

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities.

The Laboratory Supervisor will be expected to:-

1.  Ensure that adequate stocks of reagents and other consumables are available in assigned sections and track usage.

2.  Perform all aspects of Research laboratory work necessary to support clinical diagnostic and epidemiological research

3.  Liaise with collaborating programs to receive and track samples and reporting of test results.

4.  Maintain laboratory QA/QC procedures in the performance of assigned duties

5.  Perform interpretation of results

6.  Contribute actively to the development of new laboratory capabilities and when needed develop standard operation procedures for use in the laboratory

7.  Record test results obtained in an organized and timely manner, and write summary reports based on the work conducted.

8.  Guide the laboratory personnel on a day-to-day basis. This includes technical assistance, HR issues , work allocation, supervision and disciplinary measures.

9.  Perform any other duties as assigned.

 

Terms of Employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months.  Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
